Music every bellydancer should own

Dancers often ask me about music. Every bellydancer from babies to masters should listen to Middle Eastern Music. I recently gave another dancer a list of music that; I thought she should own. Here is what I suggested.

Sands of Time Music: Yasmin Henkesh has produced some fantastic music for dancers. Two albums contain full shows and other specialize in rhythms, drum solos, taksim, songs, and more. I highly recommend ordering from her or at least ordering the wonderful in-depth album booklets that contain explanations and song translations. Find these and more here.

Leila Farid’s Music: Leila is an amazing dancer and she also has some excellent albums. You can find her music from the above link as well.

Jalilah’s Raks Sharki: Jalilah produced an excellent line of albums in the 1990s that are still some of the best for Egyptian Bellydance shows. She even has an album called stage cuts for some shorter versions of some of her longer pieces. Learn more about Jalilah’s albums.

Classic singers: You should definitely collect the classics by Warda, Oum Kalthoum, and more. Listen to their singing and to instrumental versions, covers, and more.

Other stuff: 10 Songs Every Bellydancer Should know is a great album full of classic songs. For modern takes on some of the traditional songs check out other dancers like Randa and Tito. And of course you need fun music, pop songs, and other popular Arabic music by artists like Amr Diab, Hakim, Nacy Ajram, and more.

More to come: I will be adding more to this list soon. But this is at least a starting point.
